A Mexican national has been slapped with a prison sentence of over nine years for his role in a maritime operation smuggling humans and a hefty payload of methamphetamine onto a California beach, federal prosecutors announced. Jorge Muñoz-Muñoz, 27, from Ensenada, Mexico, faced the hammer of justice as United States District Judge Dale S. Fischer sentenced him to 110 months behind bars following a five-day trial that left him convicted on numerous counts, including the conspiracy to bring aliens into the United States and drug trafficking.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the doomed journey began off the coast of Santa Barbara County on September 27, 2021, when a panga boat was discovered adrift, later landing on Arroyo Quemada Beach, about 25 miles west of Santa Barbara. It was loaded with 15 people, including several crew members, and 45 pounds of methamphetamine. This operation was revealed to have charged each undocumented individual approximately $15,000 for the perilous ride.

The co-captain of the ill-fated vessel, Roel Aranzubia-Álvarez, aged 45, got a sentence of five years for his part in the trafficking operation, while crew member Caín Camargo-López, 46, also linked to the crime, pleaded guilty and received a similar sentence. The intricate operation was unraveled by Homeland Security Investigations, with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, United States Customs and Border Protection, and the California Department of Parks and Recreation providing crucial support.

Assistant United States Attorneys Haoxiaohan Cai and Justice Department Trial Attorney Siobhan M. Namazi led the charge in prosecuting this case.
