In what began as a routine call turned dangerously unique incident, over 70 Los Angeles firefighters, alongside the Los Angeles Police Department, rushed to subdue both flames and an armed suspect in a well-involved structure fire in Chatsworth. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the smokey disturbance was reported yesterday at approximately 1:57 p.m. in the 9600 block of N. Laramie Avenue.
Their efforts quickly to coordinate were hampered by an unusual complication—an armed suspect was reported to be in the home, causing the fire. As the residence spewed heavier plumes, the LAPD stepped in but struggled to access the backyard due to the encroaching fire, prompting a request for LAFD assistance to create an entry point. A handline was deployed defensively by firefighters, leading to the swift apprehension of the suspect by law enforcement officers.
Once the area was deemed safe, LAFD launched an offensive to battle the blaze, quelling the threatening flames in a mere 23 minutes. Commanded by Battalion Chief Jesus De La Cruz, the firefighters protected adjacent homes from being licked by the hungry flames. The LAFD news release spotlighted the effectiveness of the scene management and the formidable front shown by the LAFD crew.
Meanwhile, an elementary school situated conveniently across the street was plunged into lockdown and then evacuated—district police were not willing to take any chances. However, the lockdown was "quickly lifted."
Despite efforts to stabilize the situation, the suspect, an approximately 50-year-old female, was transported in grave condition and was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
