Garland is gearing up to celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with its 35th annual MLK parade. The event, which has become a staple in the community's calendar, is set to roll out on Saturday, January 13, 2024, according to the City of Garland.
With a start time of 10:00 AM, attendees can expect to fully enjoy the procession under what we hope will be a clear Texas sky. The parade will begin its route on Dairy Road at Garden Drive, near Embree Park, an appropriate launch point for an event dedicated to forging paths and bridging communities. From there, the parade will head north on Dairy Road to Highway 66 (Avenue D), before making a westerly (that's left, folks) turn onto First Street. They are then set to continue to march, north (right) on First Street to Highway 66 (Avenue B), and finally west (another left for those following along) on Avenue B to Fifth Street, where the parade will wind down at Austin Street.
This annual parade not only honors Dr. King's remarkable contributions to civil rights but also aims to unite Garland's diverse community, a mission that becomes more pressing each year. As Dr. King famously said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" It's a line that resonates deeply as the parade's participants prepare to reflect on the past while marching toward a future of continued unity and progress, per the City of Garland.
