Glendale is gearing up to get tough on tipsy motorists this Friday, with the police department setting up a DUI checkpoint in a bid to keep the streets safe. The operation will run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at a location they're keeping under wraps for now, potentially to prevent drivers from avoiding the screening.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Glendale Police Department Sergeant Ryan Gunn remarked. This quote comes straight out of the GPD's announcement, along with a reminder to the locals: alcohol isn't the only bad guy here. Legally prescribed pills and even some medications can interfere with driving.

Anyone driving under the influence could wind up with a hefty $13,500 fine and could get a suspended license. Funding for the checkpoint comes courtesy of the California Office of Traffic Safety grant, funneled through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
