Hogansville was rocked by tragedy over the weekend as a fierce house fire claimed the life of a man on Church Street. The blaze, which also spread to a van parked adjacent to the dwelling, was reported to authorities at roughly 7 p.m. Saturday, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
In an interview with 11Alive, Hogansville Police Chief Jeff Sheppard said the home was "fully engulfed" when they arrived on the scene, leading to an intense struggle against the flames that took nearly an hour to get under control. Only after fighting the large obstacles inside the home were officials able to gain control and find the man. His identity has not been disclosed yet as officials continue their investigation.
Search efforts were significantly hampered by not only the speed at which the fire spread but also by various hazards within the house, noted fire officials on Sunday. These conditions complicated the efforts to reach and potentially save the man believed to be the resident of the home, whose remains were later discovered in an area that appeared to be the bedroom, as reported by 11Alive.
While the raging flames have been extinguished, the stretch of Church Street has been temporarily closed down, creating a gap between Greenough Street and Granite Street, which was engulfed by the fire. The investigation into the cause of the deadly incident is underway, with the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Troup County Coroner getting involved. The Hogansville Police Department is asking the public for any information that might shed light on the circumstances leading up to the fire, as per FOX 5 Atlanta's findings.
