Early Monday morning, chaos ensued on the 101 Freeway in Hollywood when a driver going the wrong way sparked a collision involving six vehicles. According to CBS News Los Angeles, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. near the Sunset Boulevard off-ramp. The freeway was subsequently shut down north of Gower Street as authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate.
The collision resulted in significant wreckage and at least one person being sent to the hospital in critical condition, as tow trucks worked to manage the debris. Reports from NBC Los Angeles suggest the wrong-way driver entered the freeway using an exit ramp, a critical mistake that led to an unavoidable chain reaction of crashes. Witnesses have collaborated this account to the California Highway Patrol.
Cleanup efforts concluded with the freeway reopening around 3:30 a.m., allowing traffic to resume its normal flow as the morning progressed.
Footage from the scene captured by local news outlets showed the extent of the damage, with multiple vehicles bearing the brunt of the high-speed impact. KTLA confirmed the six-vehicle involvement and added that CHP officials are still investigating the cause of the accident, including the full details surrounding the wrong-way driver's actions prior to the collision. The condition of the transported individual has not been released.
As the investigation continues, traffic on the 101 Freeway has returned to its usual pace, with authorities urging drivers to remain alert for any unexpected dangers, especially when driving during the dark early hours.
