A chase and fatal confrontation unfolded on the streets of Houston, leading to the death of an armed suspect at the hands of a Spring Branch Independent School District (ISD) police officer. The gunfire erupted around 7:20 a.m. on Thursday at 2815 Campbell Road, in an incident steeped in carjackings and collisions, according to authorities.
A Spring Branch ISD officer was tipped off by Buffalo Creek Elementary School officials about a suspicious individual clad in all-black attire who reportedly attempted to unlawfully enter vehicles in the school parking lot. Upon laying eyes on a man matching the description, the officer endeavored to approach him only to see the suspect bolt and shockingly proceed to carjack a citizen at gunpoint in the 3000 block of Blalock Road. The suspect then led the officer on a high-speed chase, as stated in an announcement by the Houston police.
The suspect, determined not to be easily apprehended, once again pointed his firearm at the pursuing officer after being cornered, according to police accounts. A second carjacking ensued as the suspect continued to flee, eventually driving to the rear of a business establishment at 2815 Campbell Road, where his attempt to escape took a perilous turn. Allegedly ignoring commands to disarm, the suspect tragically raised his firearm at the officer, who in turn was forced to use lethal force, firing his duty weapon and striking the suspect. The Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly after and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
The suspect was purportedly connected to an earlier homicide of a family member who was found lifeless at a residence on 2507 Mona Lee Lane, an event that occurred just before the encounter with the Spring Branch ISD officer. These revelations were shared by the Houston police.
The identity of the deceased suspect is still pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, and the Spring Branch ISD officer involved in the shooting was reported to be unharmed. The incident remains under the scrutiny of HPD's Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney's Office, in accordance with the protocol when an officer discharges a weapon within city limits.
