Chaos erupted outside a Sam’s Club in Houston when a thief decided to make off with a shopper's vehicle, only to be chased down and apprehended by quick-acting citizens and law enforcement. According to the Harris County Constable's Office, the incident unfolded on December 22, 2023, at the retailer located in the 300 block of E. Richey Drive. A deputy responded after receiving a call about the stolen car.
The victim had just exited the Sam's Club when he noticed his car being driven off by a male suspect. To quickly recover his property, the victim and several witnesses didn't hesitate to give chase, determined to catch the carjacker. The suspect, later identified as David Frausto, was forced to abandon the vehicle and attempt to evade capture on foot.
An investigation into the incident later uncovered that Frausto was able to start the vehicle using a professional key tool, a device that can program a new key on the spot, enabling him to drive away with the car.
"David Frausto was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Theft," Constable Mark Herman said in a statement. Details regarding Frausto's bond and court appearance have yet to be determined.
