Tragedy struck the Gulf Freeway in Houston early Sunday, an incident that turned deadly. A 17-year-old girl was gunned down, and her male companion was injured. That unfolded in the stillness of 1:05 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department (HPD). The identity of the slain female victim is currently withheld, pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD's Homicide Division, with Sergeant N. Miyako and Detective C. Bowling, rushed to respond to a shooting call at the 1700 stretch of Gulf Freeway. Arriving officers discovered a car pulled over with an unresponsive young woman and a male wounded from gunshots. Despite the Houston Fire Department paramedics' efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while her companion, also 17, received treatment for his non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently released from the hospital.
The initial investigation points to an abrupt swerve by the female driver in an attempt to avoid a braking vehicle ahead, which led to the dire encounter. It is believed that after the victim inadvertently cut off a newer model, black or dark-colored, four-door sedan, the vehicle pulled alongside, and the passenger unleashed a barrage of gunfire into the young woman's car. Alongside the deceased girl, a male backseat passenger found himself struck by the callousness of bullets as another passenger escaped physical harm.
Currently, the shooter is only described as a black male in his mid-20s. Houston police are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600. Alternatively, for those wishing to remain unnamed, tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
