Houston Seeks Artists for Public Memorial Honoring City's Fallen Municipal WorkersSource: City of Houston

Houston artists, get your portfolios ready. The city is calling for submissions to create a public memorial honoring fallen municipal employees. The Houston Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) has launched a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) open to artists over 18 living or working in the Greater Houston area, which includes nine counties, among them Harris and Fort Bend. In a move to pay homage to those who served and sacrificed, the city is looking for talented individuals or teams to design and install a tribute at Buffalo Bayou Park.

Mayor Sylvester Turner said, "As Mayor, I'm proud to announce a heartfelt initiative, spearheaded by Houston Public Works Director Carol Haddock, to honor the service and sacrifice of our municipal workers." According to a statement from the City of Houston, Turner talked about the planned memorial standing as a beacon for the city's gratitude towards its lost employees. The job comes with risks, and the memorial is a way to recognize the lives and contributions of the city's workers who've tragically lost their lives while on duty. The city is taking a careful approach to this sensitive project, keeping in mind the unpredictable weather in Houston when reviewing artist proposals.

Finalists chosen through the RFQ will be asked to face a three-person panel, showcasing their vision for the site. The selected artist or team will have a budget of $165,000 to turn their concept into reality. Getting artistic concepts right will be crucial for those looking to be chosen for this commemorative work, which will be a permanent fixture in Buffalo Bayou Park.

The Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) is assisting in this search for the right tribute and will be handling the selection process. In a sign of inclusiveness, the HAA continues its outreach to Spanish-speaking artists, offering support for those whose first language isn't English. This city initiative is not just about creating a public art piece; it’s a personification of recognition for the city's dedicated public servants. Interested artists and teams have until 5:00 p.m. on February 5, 2024, to submit their qualifications and sample works to the HAA and kickstart the journey to creating a lasting legacy for Houston's heroes.
