In a decisive response to a security threat, a school officer detained a knife-wielding teenager who trespassed on middle school grounds in Santa Rosa on Wednesday morning. According to SRPD News, the 14-year-old intruder, who attends a different school within the district, was picked up near Herbert Slater Middle School by an interim School Resource Officer (SRO).
The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 am, when Officer Luigi Valencia, who also happens to be a licensed mental health clinician, was alerted to quickly deal with the situation while attending to another student's mental crisis. Valencia had to temporarily desert his counseling session to address the fresh threat. Next was a timely intervention by staff and Valencia, who together managed to stop and eventually detain the youth, a few houses away from the school property.
It turned out the young trespasser was armed with a folding knife, a discovery made during Valencia's probing into the student's unanticipated campus appearance. "During the investigation into the reason why the student was on the Herbert Slater Middle School campus, Officer Valencia learned the juvenile was in possession of a folding knife," reported the police department. The juvenile was subsequently arrested and booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall for possession of a knife on school grounds—a violation of California Penal Code 626.10.
Authorities were able to swiftly resolve the situation, essentially thanks to the vigilance of school staff and the immediate access to an officer on site. Officer Valencia's presence on campus allowed for a swift response to a potential safety issue," SRPD stated. Under the anonymity granted to minors in legal processes, the teenager's identity remains undisclosed. Further, the police have indicated an alleged gang affiliation, albeit not connecting it to the incident at the middle school campus.
