A blaze that engulfed a San Pedro home early Monday morning was quashed by firefighters within minutes, officials said. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported a structure fire at 687 W 20th St. at 7:49 a.m., with flames threatening to spread to a neighboring two-story apartment building.
According to a LAFD alert, the one-story detached home was "well involved with fire" upon the arrival of emergency responders. In a rapid response, it took the first arriving 18 LAFD firefighters just eight minutes to successfully confine and fully extinguish the heavy fire.
No injuries were reported in the incident, and firefighters managed to prevent the fire from reaching the adjacent apartments. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the timely work of the LAFD has been noted as preventing what could have been a much more serious disaster.
"The first arriving 18 LAFD firefighters took just eight minutes to access, confine, and extinguish heavy fire in a detached one-story home," an LAFD spokesperson commented, noting that their efforts were able to prevent the flames from extending into the nearby two-story garden-style apartment building, as detailed in the follow-up report by the fire department.
Firefighters at the scene were from Fire Stations 48 and Battalion 6, and included multiple companies and tactical units. With the blaze now extinguished, the community is looking to assess the damage and help those affected. As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the LAFD has not released further details at this time.
