Officers and volunteers questioned revelers about their drink count and whether they felt buzzed enough to compromise their driving, then challenged them to estimate their blood alcohol content (BAC)—a sobering reality check for those on the verge of underestimating their booze intake. The initiative is backed by sobering stats from the California Driver Handbook: a man weighing up to 220 pounds could hit the limit after three drinks, while a woman weighing up to 160 pounds could tip the scales after just two. Add to this the staggering cost of a DUI, which the boys in blue peg at around $13,500, including fines, fees, hikes in auto insurance, and the kind of hangover no Bloody Mary can fix.
In a cameo aimed at preventing DUI disasters, Lt. Jose Flores emphasized the campaign's critical goal, "The goal is to help people understand the effects of alcohol so they can make smart decisions about how they get home," he elaborated, an outreach effort illustrating that just a few drinks could impair a driver more than expected. Revelers were given literature on alcohol intake and sobering reminders of the 0.08% legal BAC limit greeted them as they mingled and mulled over their subsequent travel plans.
Funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and channeling resources from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the "Know Your Limit" program aims to proactively engage the community before more lives are turned upside down by the preventable tragedy of drunk driving; it's an interactive tutorial brought to the heart of nightlife, where theory and practical consequence coalesce.
