Long Beach is bringing heat to the streets with an Inclement Weather Shelter aimed at shielding the homeless from the winter's frigid embrace. Mayor Rex Richardson announced the Multi-Service Center (MSC) will transform into an overnight haven when the mercury dips or when storms hit hard. "We are proud to add the Inclement Weather Shelter to our suite of interim housing options here in Long Beach," Richardson said, per the City of Long Beach's official press release.

Officials are set to quickly activate the shelter when forecasted temperatures are set to falter to 45° F or lower or if flood warnings rear their ugly heads. The MSC at 1301 W. 12th St. will open doors from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., ready to warmly receive up to 60 souls seeking refuge from the storm. The center plans to serve a hot dinner and provide breakfast, as well as restrooms, hygiene supplies, and beds—split between different rooms for men and women.

Outreach teams have their marching orders to spread the word about the emergency accommodations. Residents who want to lend a hand can donate items for the less fortunate or offer a helping hand through the city's Medical Reserve Corps. The city's humanitarian effort is lining up with additional support from Los Angeles County and funds from Measure H. Details on enlistment and donations are available on Long Beach's government website.

The shelters are planning to regularly join the fight against the cold now through March 2024. This program builds on the city's existing Winter Shelter, which is already serving up a side of hope 24/7 to 125 people in need, according to Long Beach's press release. Social media channels like @lbhealthdept and @longbeachcity will keep the public posted on the shelter's status with updates tagged #EveryoneHomeLB.
