Public health officials have issued warnings on some of the coasts due to health-threatening bacteria levels. They issued an advisory against getting into the surf at several spots, including Santa Monica Pier, Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey, and an area of Malibu Lagoon close to the Surfrider Beach public restrooms.
The warnings, which were publicized yesterday, urge swimmers, surfers, and beach bums to stay clear of these waters. They apply to 100 yards up and down the coast from the Santa Monica Pier and the full swim area at Mothers Beach, as reported by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. On the bright side, those hoping to take a dip at Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro can now breathe a sigh of relief; the previous warnings there have been lifted following satisfactory water quality tests.
The contamination of beaches is a reoccurring issue that poses a serious risk to public health. The County's beach closure hotline offers round-the-clock updates at 1-800-525-5662.
