In a digital stride to streamline the process of law enforcement, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has announced that citizens can now report specific crimes online. The department's move, intended to make filing reports more convenient for victims of minor crimes, comes as an innovation in bureaucratic accessibility. Using the Sheriff's Online Report Tracking System (SORTS), individuals no longer need to visit a police station to file a report for certain categories of crime or incident.
Running across the keyboard to access the online system, victims of theft, vandalism, and loss, can be filed using the SORTS system provided the value is under specified thresholds. This includes lost or stolen cell phones valued at $950 or less, and other property under the same value margin, as well as vandalism damage assessed at less than $400, excluding graffiti. The online service also extends to thefts from unlocked vehicles or open areas, as long as the stolen goods are less than $950 in value.
For a report to kick off in the system, the incident must fit within the defined categories, according to an announcement by the Altadena Sheriff’s Station. Once submitted and accepted, complainants are assured a free copy of the approved police report via email, providing them with essential documentation for their records. Law enforcement officials have emphasized that all cases filed through SORTS will be subject to review.
An additional service, for slipped through the cracks of incidents – the Supplemental Loss Form – can be filed by those who have already registered a crime with a LASD report number. This feature allows for the addition of information or the documentation of further losses connected to the initially reported incident. The Altadena Sheriff's Station extended its thanks to the public in a grateful nod towards community cooperation and the enhanced efficiency promised by the new system.
