Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles has wrapped up her "Locking Arms and Delivering for Los Angeles Tour," and is now setting the stage to mark her one-year anniversary in office with an address and a Telephone Town Hall for residents. During her tour, Bass showcased a host of accomplishments in tackling the city's homelessness issues and boosting public safety, among other initiatives.
As per the tour's finale, the mayor's office announced that President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden made an appearance in Los Angeles, underscoring the city's high-profile efforts in various sectors. A milestone of bringing more than 21,000 homeless Angelenos inside since December 2022 was highlighted, a substantial increase compared to the previous year. In a statement released by her office, Mayor Bass said, "This year, we have confronted challenges before us with urgency and unity." Delving into measures such as crime prevention through community-led initiatives, Bass noted the recent uptick in LAPD academy applications, evidence, she suggests, of a successful comprehensive safety strategy.
The business landscape in Los Angeles also received a boost with the announcement that Banc of California is set to relocate its headquarters to the city, potentially stirring economic development. Mayor Bass has put forth tangible efforts to support small business growth, including the establishment of a small business policy team and streamlining processes for businesses setting foot or expanding in Los Angeles.
Climate action didn't lag behind, as the city secured hundreds of millions through partnerships at the state and federal levels. Echoing the green legacies of her predecessors, Mayor Bass vows to create a climate-forward Los Angeles. "Together, with urgency, collaboration, and innovation, we will continue to build a better future in every neighborhood, for every Angeleno. Nothing will stop Los Angeles," the Mayor stated.
Notably, city services saw a significant uptick, delivering 100,000 more services than the previous year, alongside a monthly increase in Metro ridership throughout 2023. Beyond service improvement, more than 2,500 new hires have joined the city's workforce to cover existing vacancies, advancing Mayor Bass’s vision of a responsive and efficient municipal ecosystem. With her first anniversary address highly anticipated, Bass looks to further her dialogue with citizens, aiming to uphold her administration's track record of active and solution-oriented governance.
