A vicious attack disrupted the peace of Shabbat for a Jewish couple in Beverly Hills last week, leading to outrage and a swift response from authorities. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón confirmed that Jarris Silagi faces charges for the violent encounter that occurred while the victims were en route to their synagogue to celebrate the sacred day. According to an announcement from the District Attorney's office on December 12, Silagi has been accused of attempting to rob and assaulting the elderly couple.
The prosecution has alleged that Silagi aggressively ran up to the 75-year-old man, striking him on the head with a belt and causing injury. His wife was also a target in the attempted robbery. The charges against Silagi include attempted second-degree robbery, elder or dependent adult abuse, and assault with a deadly weapon, among others, with the DA's office recommending that Silagi's bail be set at over $1 million. Notably, the elderly man was wearing a yarmulke during the Hannukah holiday incident, leading to concerns that this was an antisemitic hate crime.
In a statement obtained by the DA's media relations, Gascón expressed strong condemnation of the attack, stating, "I unequivocally condemn the violent attack inflicted upon those peacefully observing their faith." The District Attorney emphasized the absence of a place for antisemitism and the commitment of his office’s Hate Crimes Unit to ensure justice for the victims. Silagi, if convicted, could face a life sentence. The event, captured on video, has further solidified the case against the accused.
The arraignment took place at the Airport Courthouse, where Silagi's charges were formally read. "Such acts of Antisemitism have no place in our community, and we continue to be committed to ensuring justice prevails and holding the defendant accountable," said Gascón. In the wake of this event, city officials have reminded residents to always swiftly report any hate crimes or incidents through appropriate channels like 911 and the LA vs. Hate hotline.
