The Napa Police Department is set to crack down on impaired driving by setting up a DUI checkpoint on December 16. For the community's safety, the checkpoint will take place from 6 PM to 2 AM at a location within the city limits still under wraps.
This safety measure comes as a response to collected data regarding the hotspots for accidents related to impaired driving throughout the city, showing us where the risks are highest and where the rule of the law must assert itself to confront the scourge of negligence and intoxication behind the wheel.
According to a statement obtained by the City of Napa's official website, Sergeant Aaron Medina of the Napa Police Department underscored the dangers, saying, "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," he added, making it clear that the police force sees prevention as a critical tool, "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety."
Hitting the streets under the influence can rack up a tab that includes fines and penalties averaging $13,500, not to mention the hassle of a suspended license for those caught and charged. The local police want it to be known that booze isn't the only culprit; legal medications, along with legal recreational and medicinal marijuana, can impair driving just as well, all of which will land you in hot water if you're busted at the wheel.
The funding for this DUI checkpoint comes from California taxpayer dollars funneled through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, indicating a state and national commitment to sober driving.
For more details on the upcoming DUI checkpoint, the public is encouraged to review the official announcement, available at the City of Napa website.
