As the anticipation for New Year's Eve celebrations grows, law enforcement in North Harris County is ramping up efforts to deter illegal gunfire. Constable Mark Herman's office announced the deployment of hundreds of deputy Constables who will patrol both in marked and unmarked vehicles. Their mission is clear: to identify and take action against the dangerous practice of celebratory gunfire as revelers ring in 2024.
During this period, when the night skies are traditionally lit with fireworks, distinguishing them from sporadic gunshots presents a challenge. Yet, constable deputies are up for the task. "Constable deputies are trained to distinguish between fireworks and actual gunfire and will take action on illegal celebratory gunfire," Constable Mark Herman stated in a message on Facebook.
The gravity of shooting guns into the air cannot be overstated. Bullets shot upwards will inevitably return to the ground with enough velocity to cause injury or even death. It's a simple principle of physics often ignored in the frivolity of festivity: what goes up, must come down. Hence, the local Constable's office is earnest in its plea for residents to exercise caution and refrain from illegal gunfire as they bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new.
In addition to increasing patrols, the Constable's office is urging the public to be proactive. They are calling on citizens and communities to immediately contact law enforcement if they witness any instances of illegal gunfire. The partnership between the public and the police is vital for ensuring a safe environment as 2023 draws to a close. Vigilance by all is the expected price for peace during a time of year when unity and celebration should be at the forefront of every mind.
