To address the homelessness crisis in San Bernardino County, the Sheriff's Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement (H.O.P.E.) team took action last Friday to offer essential services to those living on the streets. The initiative, dubbed "Operation Shelter Me," focused on Barstow and the surrounding communities from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., attempting to provide the homeless with housing, medical, and mental health care services. According to an announcement posted on the Sheriff’s Department's Nixle alert system, the outreach targeted particularly those suffering from severe mental illnesses, trying to link them to treatment and support services.
Despite the challenges of limited service capacity, the H.O.P.E. team managed to give 20 individuals referrals to various assistance programs. Furthermore, three individuals were able to get linked with crucial follow-up professional services. One person from Bloomington was provided with temporary housing and assistance resources. "Operation Shelter Me" is part of San Bernardino County's larger commitment to tackle homelessness, supported by Senate Bill 170 which provided funding for such operations, as revealed in the sheriff's department update.
Interestingly, the operation also sought to identify individuals eligible for services under Laura's Law. This law, adopted by the county in June 2023, facilitates court-ordered community treatment for individuals with a history of hospitalization or incarceration, as well as those with a history of self-harm or violence toward others. However, deputies did not come across any individuals who met the criteria for Laura's Law during this particular operation.
The ongoing efforts by the H.O.P.E. team are set to continue over the next several years with a focus on connecting the homeless population to essential services. While the immediate impact of these operations may appear small, officials expect to gradually increase their reach and effectiveness as more resources become available. Information on how to contact the H.O.P.E. team for those in need was provided by the sheriff's department, encouraging community members to refer individuals experiencing homelessness to the available services.
