The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is gearing up to buff patrol this Friday, December 29, with a keen eye for any slip-ups made by both motorists and motorcyclists that could spell disaster on the road.

In a bid to curb crashes which often lead to severe injuries or worse, deputies are looking to strictly enforce traffic regulations. Motorcyclists, who are a staggering 28 times more likely to die in a crash than those cozied up in cars, will be under particular scrutiny. They've been urged to don DOT-compliant helmets, slap on some reflective tape, and always keep those headlights shining, even when the sun’s up. According to the report by the Orange County Sheriff's Department, "Motorcyclists are encouraged to enroll in the California Motorcyclist Safety Program."

OCSD's advisory puts it bluntly for drivers: "Never follow a motorcycle too closely. Always keep a safe distance."

The safety enforcement operation is part of a broader strategy, funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
