The Petaluma Police Department is setting up a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, December 15, as reported by the department. The checkpoint will operate within city limits from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at a location to be disclosed on the day. DUI checkpoints aim to cut the number of impaired drivers on the road, potentially reducing accidents caused by alcohol and drugs.

With DUI collisions accounting for 1,370 deaths in California in 2021, these checkpoints are a proactive measure to deter such incidents. They are strategically placed in areas known for high collision statistics and DUI arrests, maximizing their impact. According to the advisory issued by Petaluma Police, well-publicized checkpoints like this one have been proven to lower the incidence of impaired driving crashes by as much as 20 percent.

The police will be checking motorists for signs of impairment from alcohol and drugs and proper licensing, with trained officers on hand for assessments of drug influence. Even though the stops will cause only brief delays, they represent a critical component in the fight against impaired driving during the holiday season. Encouraging safer roads, Petaluma Police urge partygoers to designate a sober driver or use public transport and ride-sharing options.

Sergeant Walt Spiller, representing the Petaluma PD, emphasized the importance of being responsible, stating, "Driving Under the Influence is 100% preventable." The enforcement is part of an ongoing effort by the police department to curb impaired driving and enhance traffic safety. Offenders nabbed for DUI for the first time can face a slew of consequences, including around $13,500 to $20,000 in fines and penalties, as well as license suspension.

The initiative is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, showcasing federal and local partnerships in addressing road safety concerns. The Petaluma Police Department remains committed to keeping the streets safe and is determined to continue locating and prosecuting drivers under the influence.
