Shovels hit the ground in Redlands last weekend with the construction of an 80-unit housing development tailor-made for local veterans and their families, complete with vital on-the-spot support services. San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs linked arms with A Community of Friends (ACOF) at the ceremonial beginning of what's dubbed Liberty Lane, according to an announcement from the county.
Tagging a $51 million price tag, Liberty Lane is a brainchild of teamwork involving Western Community Housing (WCH), ACOF, and a slew of local, city, and county partnerships, projected to be a 2026-ready sanctuary for those who served. U.S. Vets’ case managers will be at the forefront, armed with mental health services and substance use recovery programs, in a full-court press.
In a sentiment echoed at the groundbreaking, San Bernardino County's top brass underscored the solemn obligation owed to our nation's defenders. "Our veterans have made significant sacrifices to protect our freedom. It is our duty to prioritize the provision of safe housing and support services for these citizens," Board of Supervisors Chair and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe stressed.
According to San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs Director Ralph Duarte, "Projects like these address our vision to provide long-term housing for homeless veterans in our county with a holistic approach for the quality of life they deserve." the county notes in their dispatch.
