Amid the barren desert and piercing sunshine of 29 Palms, a gesture of international goodwill took place yesterday. In a show of cross-border camaraderie, the San Bernardino County Fire Department (SBCoFD) handed off a fully refurbished ambulance to their firefighting counterparts in San Felipe, Mexico. The hand-off, as reported by the department's official Facebook page, signals a continuing relationship that sees old resources gain new life in the service of others.
Leading the charge on this cross-border altruism, Captain Jay Dimoff has been a key player in a series of donations that the SBCoFD has made over recent years. The generosity stretches beyond mere apparatus, including much-needed supplies for the Mexican firefighters. “There is no greater feeling than seeing our surplus apparatus and equipment serving the community in San Felipe with my own eyes,” said Captain Dimoff, according to a Facebook post by San Bernardino County Fire. Adding to this spirit of goodwill, Firefighter Juan Cortez and Chief Carlos Quijada of San Felipe Fire will be responsible for navigating the ambulance through customs before it can be officially put into use at its new station.
The symbolic keys to the life-saving vehicle were not just passed between the hands of firefighters alone; the local rotary club, Rotary 29, has also thrown their hat and funds into the ring. The charitable group played a pivotal role, contributing financially to bring this project to fruition and exemplifying community-driven support that knows no borders. The act of giving resonates within the collaborative spirit, positioning this tale of international aid as one where the local community stands in alliance with those miles away.
Once destined for decommissioning, the ambulance now sets off on a journey of reinvention as it heads to the border, awaiting a weeklong customs process.
