Chaos ensued on the interstate yesterday evening as a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 20 near Fulton Industrial Boulevard brought traffic to a grinding halt, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. The blaze, which began just before 6 p.m., was significant enough to shut down all westbound lanes, drastically affecting the evening rush hour.
Onlookers in the eastbound lanes couldn't help but slow down, creating a backup that mirrored the standstill on the opposite side. As a result of the fire, Fulton Industrial Boulevard became heavily congested in both directions, adding to the already burdensome delay for Atlanta commuters. SKYFOX 5 captured images of emergency workers slicing through the trailer's roof to tackle the flames, though the exact cause of the inferno remains undetermined.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the situation called for a heavy emergency response, with several firefighters and law enforcement officials on the scene. Traffic was impacted for hours and finally returned to normal around 9:30 p.m. The disruption extended to Interstate 285 as well, contributing to a less than stellar commute home for many.
"All lanes were closed for approximately two hours while firefighters extinguished the fire," stated the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The tractor-trailer, fully engulfed in flames, had been divided between the cabin and the cargo, which was packed with what was later identified as tissue paper. Despite the severity of the circumstances and the intensity of the firefighting efforts, no injuries have been reported. Both Cobb and Fulton County police were instrumental in managing the ensuing traffic complications.
