Allen's City Council dropped the gavel on a major neighborhood development and set the date for a return to city hall meetings this past Tuesday. The approved development aims to transform the northeast corner of Custer Road and McDermott Drive, right alongside Allen Fire Station #5. Billed as a boost for the community, the new locale will offer trails that promise to seamlessly tie into the existing city-wide trail network, according to the City of Allen.
In a step to bring back some pre-pandemic normalcy, council meetings are slated to resume within the hallowed chambers of Allen City Hall starting January 23. For months, the Allen ISD Professional Learning and Auxiliary Services building served as an alternative venue while the traditional council chambers underwent renovations, forcing the council to temporarily relocate its proceedings.
Mayor Ken Brooks declared Monday, January 13 to be “Collin County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Appreciation Day.” Embracing the spirit of the late civil rights leader, the proclamation was handed to the Collin County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Appreciation Day Steering Committee, represented at the council meeting by community leaders and activists who gladly accepted the honor, as reported by the City of Allen.
The council also has its calendar set for future gatherings, which occur at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. Civic engagement can continue to flourish as Allen residents look to actively follow their council's agenda and decisions. To keep promptly in the loop, locals can sign up for City Meeting Notices at the City of Allen website, where meeting agendas are posted to ensure that nothing slips through the cracks.
