A Benicia man with a history of felony convictions is back in the hot seat after a federal grand jury dropped the hammer with a new indictment for illegal gun possession, authorities announced today. Jeremiah Malik Jefferson, 26, finds himself facing federal charges once again after being busted with a loaded gun during a November raid on his residence, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The search, which unearthed the illicit firearm complete with a high-capacity magazine — reported stolen no less — places Jefferson, already on the radar for previous felonies, including burglary, in direct violation of the law barring felons from packing heat. His rap sheet includes a similar charge for which he'd already been convicted, making this his second dance with federal gun possession charges.
This case didn't just fall into the laps of law enforcement; it's the outcome of collaborated detective work spearheaded by the U.S. Probation Office, some keen-nosed policing by the Benicia Police Department, and the tactical support of the ATF and the FBI's Solano County Violent Crimes Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian T. Kinsella is front and center, leading the prosecution efforts on this one, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Jefferson's case is roped into Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a high-profile campaign to reduce the violence that keeps law-abiding citizens peeking through their curtains. Launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2021, PSN is pulling out all the stops to promote safer streets, echoing a mandate for trust-building community efforts and, naturally, strategic enforcement. Those curious about the finer points of Project Safe Neighborhoods can snoop around the Justice Department's PSN page.
