A Clinton Township man is facing a myriad of charges, including second-degree murder, following the fatal shooting of his child's mother. Jaion Barnes, 23, was arraigned in the 41B District Court and his bond was set at $750,000 cash/surety, reports CBS Detroit.
According to authorities, the tragic incident occurred on January 15 at the Peachtree Apartments in Clinton Township during an exchange of their two-year-old child. In the wake of the shooting, Barnes fled the scene but subsequently turned himself in to the police. This case has been noted as the first homicide in Macomb County for the year 2024, as stated by The Macomb Daily.
Barnes, who has a history of criminal convictions, has also been charged with felon in possession of a firearm, felony firearm, and domestic violence second offense. If convicted of the second-degree murder charge, as a habitual fourth offender, he faces a mandatory minimum 25-year prison sentence. "This domestic violence tragedy has caused profound pain and irreparable harm to this child and the victim's family," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement obtained by WWJ Newsradio.
The victim, identified by CBS Detroit as 23-year-old Tianna Shacari Ross, was allegedly shot by Barnes during a heated argument. Lucido underscored the commitment to seeking justice and holding the perpetrator accountable. No further court dates have been scheduled as of this article's latest updates.
