Dallas Eateries Shine with Eight Nominations for Prestigious James Beard AwardsSource: Wikipedia

Dallas' culinary scene made a bite-sized appearance on the James Beard Awards semifinalist list this year. Eight Dallas-area eateries are in the running for the nation's top food honors, as reported by the Dallas Observer.

Though the list wasn't as full as last year when 15 local spots had hoped to score one of the coveted spots, this year's contenders are no less enthusiastic. Perennial favorite Lucia, helmed by David Uygur, has cut Outstanding Chef. Uygur should try and ride the momentum from last year where his Italian nook secured a nomination in the same category.

According to The Dallas Express, La Casita Bakeshop is turning heads in the Outstanding Bakery slot for the second consecutive year after expanding to a 6,000-square-foot facility to churn out confections for over 175 local establishments. Gemma claims its spot not only with Outstanding Hospitality but also with mouthwatering modern American fare that seems to be keeping the Dallas crowds content.

As competition heats up in the Best Chef: Texas category, five local chefs from diverse culinary backgrounds are in it to win it. Misti Norris continues to impress with her locally sourced offerings at Petra and the Beast; Anastacia Quiñones-Pittman brings vibrant Mexican cuisine to the table with José; and Regino Rojas mixes traditional with international at Purépecha. Over at Vaqueros Texas Bar-B-Q, Arnulfo Sánchez III smokes up a storm, while Rich Vana’s Heritage Table stands out with its innovative albeit accessible dishes.

Despite the drop in numbers, local foodies are buzzing with the potential for a Dallas chef to finally take home a James Beard Award. It's been a while since the city has basked in the glory of top prizes from the foundation, which last year only saw six nominees move from semifinals to nominee status. With stakes high and pans hot, all eyes will be on whether this year’s batch can turn their nominations into wins.
