Dallas is set to commemorate the late congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson with a series of memorial services. Johnson, who was often referred to by her initials 'EBJ', passed away at the age of 88 on December 31st. She had been a pioneering figure in Texas politics, representing Dallas in the U.S. Congress from 1993 to 2023, according to FOX 4 News.

Plans for the services, slated to honor her life and her over-three-decade-long tenure as a political force, have been put forward by her family. The series of memorials are intended to "come together to honor, remember, and celebrate the life of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson," the family said. A viewing is scheduled to be held on January 8th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the historic Hall of State in Fair Park, Dallas, as per CBS News.

Following the viewing, a wake service is to take place on the evening of the same day at Concord Church in Dallas, running from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. EBJ's funeral service will also be held at Concord Church, beginning at 10 a.m. the next day.

Finally, a graveside service is to be conducted on Wednesday, January 10th, at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, beginning sharply at 2 p.m. Eddie Bernice Johnson, who before her long service in Congress was the first Black woman to be elected to public office in Dallas in 1972, was known for her commitment to issues including healthcare, STEM, and education, with Dallas ISD's Eddie Bernice Johnson STEM Academy bearing her name as a testament to her advocacy.

In a gesture marking respect for the congresswoman's service, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has requested that all City of Dallas flags be flown at half-staff through Friday, January 5.
