The San Antonio Spurs may be in the throes of a disheartening season, but the team's owner Peter J. Holt has set his sights on building a basketball behemoth. With a 7-33 record, the Spurs, tied with the Washington Wizards, are languishing at the nether region of the NBA standings, yet hope springs eternal in the form of 20-year-old French phenom Victor Wembanyama.
Despite the current gloom, Wembanyama's towering presence and his impressive rookie year stats are the silver lining for the beleaguered franchise. According to reports from Spurs Wire, Holt detailed his plan to construct a "superpower" around his star rookie in a chat with Yann Ohnona of French outlet L'Equipe. "We don't think about that," Holt stated. "We don't believe there is a deadline for success. Some people try to take shortcuts to the top, to short-circuit the process. It usually backfires."
Holt's blueprint for success is underpinned by a slow and steady approach – a philosophy he shared with L'Equipe, as per a report by KENS 5. "Having a generational talent like Victor, with other quality players, while having extended Pop (Gregg Popovich) for five years, building on RC (Buford) who has built championship teams, is the right thing to do," said Holt. The owner appears to be playing the long game, banking on a mix of talent development and strategic acquisitions to lift the Spurs out of their current slump.
Wembanyama isn't just a lone beacon for the Spurs. Alongside the draft darling, the team boasts ample salary cap space, a reservoir of draft picks, and tradeable contracts – tools that could be key in reshaping the roster and rousing the Spurs from their rebuild. "When we look at the whole picture, we know we are on the right track. We'll find the balance between development and results. We don't want a roller coaster between victories and defeats. We want to build a superpower, ultra-competitive that lasts for a long time," Holt emphasized.
