A Detroit man is facing serious charges after a violent confrontation with police resulted in an officer being shot, authorities report. Barry Holley Washington, 45, was involved in a shootout with Detroit police when they responded to a reported shooting last week, as per officials. The incident occurred late in the evening on January 11 in the 12900 block of Burt Street, according to statements from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, as per FOX 2 Detroit.
Washington allegedly fired a shotgun at the officers when they located him on the second floor of an apartment building, sparking an exchange of gunfire. He has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, discharge of a firearm in a building, and felony firearm. During the shootout, which was triggered after officers, arrived after being alerted by ShotSpotter, of the shots fired inside the apartment, one officer was wounded in the arm, as per The Detroit News.
While the injured officer was treated and released from the hospital, Washington himself was not injured in the incident. A judge has set his bond at $100,000 cash, and if released, he must wear a GPS tether and remain under house arrest. Two other suspects believed to be at the apartment at the time were reportedly shot, but the Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Washington was not one of those injured.
As the legal proceedings move forward, a bond redetermination hearing for Washington is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. Thursday. Following closely, Washington's probable cause conference is expected for 8:30 a.m. the following Wednesday before Judge Patricia Jefferson.
