A Detroit police officer and two suspects were injured in a shootout late Thursday in a residence on the city's west side. According to The Detroit News, the incident occurred after officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 12900 block of Burt Road, near West Davison and Interstate 96, at around 11:18 p.m.
Upon arriving to investigate the alert for shots fired, heard from inside the home were officers. Chief James White said, "Officers entered the home and made their way to its second level. The first two officers who went up the stairs encountered a suspect and were fired upon." The officer, who has been on the force for four years, was hit twice in the upper body, but another officer quickly pulled him to safety while returning fire, White told The Detroit News.
Police say they recovered three weapons at the scene, including a shotgun. While the investigation continues, Chief White suggested, according to FOX 2 Detroit, that the police action may have interrupted either "a robbery-murder or a murder."
Both the wounded officer and the two suspects were taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital for treatment. Amidst the chaos of the shootout, the identification of who injured the suspects has remained unclear, though they had acquired their wounds by the time officers brought them into custody. "It appears that they were clearly distrusting either a robbery-murder or a murder because of the amount of firearms that we recovered and the fact that they were actively shooting at the officers," White said in a statement to FOX 2 Detroit.
