In an effort to provide aid to the homeless population of Fontana and its nearby locales, San Bernardino County law enforcement's Community Service & Reentry Division, alongside members of the H.O.P.E. Team, engaged in "Operation Shelter Me" this past Friday. The initiative is designed to connect those without homes to essential housing, medical, and mental health treatment resources. According to a press release issued by the Sheriff-Coroner's Department, the outreach program ran from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., focusing on individuals suffering from severe mental illness.

The operation led to 41 individuals receiving referrals to assorted assistance programs, while five were connected with follow-up professional services. Notably, a person in the midst of a crisis was transported to a local Crisis Stabilization Unit, paving the way toward intervention and potential housing solutions. Despite the limited available services, the team pledged to persist in their support for these community members as they acquire access to additional resources.

Last year's senate enactment, Senate Bill 170, which marshals funding for such initiatives, has been a catalyst for this focused outreach. Even though deputies did not find any subjects meeting the criteria for Laura's Law, a program for court-ordered community treatment aimed at recurrently institutionalized or incarcerated individuals, the endeavor is seen as a small beacon of hope for many in need.

The sheriff's department underscored the continuous effort, citing that the H.O.P.E. Team and allied services would maintain these operations countywide in the coming years. They encourage anyone aware of homeless individuals in need of services to contact the H.O.P.E. Team directly.

Shannon D. Dicus, the Sheriff-Coroner of San Bernardino County, through the aforementioned press release, reaffirmed the department's commitment to addressing homelessness through ongoing supportive operations facilitated by state-funded programs.
