A Fort Worth man has been sentenced to a life term after a Tarrant County jury found him guilty of severely injuring a local police officer by running over him with his car during a police pursuit. Ronnie Jackson, 41, was trying to quickly escape law enforcement when he collided with Officer Matt Brazeal, who was deploying spike strips aimed to bring the chase to an abrupt end, as per FOX 4 News.
The incident, which took place in June 2020, resulted in Brazeal being dragged behind Jackson's vehicle for over 100 feet. The aftermath left the officer with a broken pelvis, ribs, a collapsed lung, and a traumatic brain injury. Following the harrowing ordeal, the officer was forced to undergo over 60 surgeries and engage in continuous rehab visits to recover from the sustained near-fatal wounds.
Officer Brazeal, an Army veteran who dedicated three years to service in the Fort Worth Police Department, had only just returned to a limited duty capacity last week, nearly four years after the atrocious incident. His law enforcement career also includes tenure as a peace officer in surrounding communities, including Parker County and Weatherford, as reported by NBC DFW.
Despite the considerable time that has elapsed since the attack, Jackson's trial concluded this Monday with a life imprisonment verdict. The sentence aims to act as a decisive denouncement of violence against law enforcement personnel, mirroring society's expectation that those who attempt to seriously harm or kill police officers will be met with the full weight of justice.
