Frisco is gearing up to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this Saturday. According to an announcement on the city's official website, the 2nd annual Frisco Unity Day will kick off on January 13, packed with a string of free events honoring the civil rights icon.

Starting at 9:30 a.m., a volunteer service fair is slated to take place at the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center. By 10 a.m., folks can enjoy jazz tunes from University of North Texas musicians at the City Hall Council Chambers. A promising student from the Linking Cultures of Frisco competition is also set to deliver a Dr. King oration.

As reported by the City of Frisco, a powerful crescendo to the student's speech will be a gospel choir performance, filling the venue with melodic tributes. Post-music, residents can take a short walk next door to the Frisco Square Cinemark for a complimentary screening of "Selma", the critically acclaimed film depicting Dr. King's historical march from Selma to Montgomery for equal voting rights.

The free movie showing, set to begin at 1:30 p.m., offers a chance to dive deep into the challenges faced during the civil rights movement. However, tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Showings are in two theatres, reinforcing the city's commitment to making the event accessible to as many community members as possible.

Several local organizations, including the Frisco Inclusion Committee and Frisco Police Community Foundation, will be actively participating in the Unity Day events. In line with the spirit of volunteering, Mayor Jeff Cheney emphasized the city's interconnectedness, reportedly saying, "We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now," as per the city announcement.

Frisco government offices will shut down on Monday, January 15, in observance of the holiday, with normal hours resuming the following day. Starting Tuesday, residents are encouraged to drop off food items at City Hall to support Frisco Family Services, stretching a helping hand to neighbors in need.
