A Honduran national with a history of illegal entries into the United States has been sentenced to 30 months behind bars, this following his guilty plea last October for sneaking into the country again.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Abner Jovani Castellanos, 42, faced Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo on Monday, where his sentence was delivered, Judge Marmolejo additionally imposed a three-year supervised release period once he's served his time, Castellanos has a checkered past inclusive of a 2008 conviction for his role in a human smuggling operation that led to an El Salvadoran man losing part of his leg due to an accident involving a train, according to court testimony.
Castellanos, who had been deported from the U.S. on multiple occasions, his first removal stretching back to June 5, 2001, and with six subsequent removals up until 2020, got nabbed by law enforcement near Laredo, Texas in June of last year.
With a rap sheet that includes prior convictions for illegal entry and re-entry, Castellanos is now waiting for transfer to a federal penitentiary, details of which will be finalized shortly, currently being held in custody his pattern of unlawful entries and the smuggler’s disregard for legal boundaries have resulted in a substantial prison term, an attempt to deter future infractions says the prosecuting team led by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Terence A. Check Jr. and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon Scott Bowling, the Border Patrol spearheaded the investigation that led to his latest downfall.
