Houston residents are reeling from shockingly high water bills, with one family reporting a staggering $21,000 charge, leaving them fearful to even use water in their own home. Elizabeth Ruiz, at the center of this billing fiasco, displayed the astronomical bill and voiced the family's distress: "Look at this. That's $21,212.09, which is very shocking." The Ruiz family has been in their North Houston home for three decades and finds themselves unable to understand the charges or fathom how they would make payments, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.
In a separate but similarly troubling case, Brandon Mora of Denver Harbor was slapped with a $1,379.98 water bill, a substantial jump from the family's usual $150. Their usage reportedly skyrocketed from the usual 6,000 to 9,000 gallons a month to an implausible 17,000 gallons. Despite a series of interactions with city officials, including sending a message to Houston Public Works on X, the Mora family received no reasonable resolution. This information was obtained through an ABC13 report. Houston Public Works cited privacy concerns and was unable to provide additional context on the case.
Amid the outrage, Houston Mayor John Whitmire has been under pressure to deliver a remedy for the city's erratic water bill system. Promises of a forthcoming plan have been made, but the reveal has been delayed, with a spokesperson stating, "The plan is not 'delayed.' There was never a deadline." Contributions from both FOX26 Houston and ABC13 convey a picture of widespread apprehension over the city's water billing practices.
