A man was apprehended after shooting at undercover cops in Houston, authorities said Wednesday. The incident unfolded in broad daylight on a busy Tuesday afternoon at approximately 12:55 p.m., when shots rang out at 3000 Wayne Street.
The Houston Police Department said the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Justin Tramaine Williams, was arrested and hit with aggravated assault and gun charges. Williams reportedly approached an unmarked police car, returned with a gun and began to openly fire, striking the vehicle repeatedly. The officers, who were part of a narcotics surveillance operation, fortunately did not sustain injuries, nor did they have to use their weapons, according to a news release from the City of Houston.
"HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detectives M. Bellahna and B. Kaya reported: HPD Narcotics Division officers were conducting a surveillance operation in the area near the above address when a male suspect approached the officers’ unmarked police vehicle to inspect who was inside," the news release stated. "The suspect then returned armed with a pistol and fired shots, striking the vehicle multiple times."
Following his arrest, Williams was quickly to face justice, being charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm in the 339th State District Court. His booking photo was shared along with the news release, marking his changed status from a suspect to an accused gunman in a matter of hours.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office was brought in and moved swiftly to slap charges on Williams for the shootout. He is now cooling his heels behind bars at the Harris County Jail, waiting for his day in court. The police officers involved were given a clean bill of health, with no casualties on either side in this dangerous face-off between law enforcement and a man who, for reasons yet unknown, decided to shoot up a police car.
