In a heartfelt nod to military service and the sacrifices made by veterans, Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has orchestrated a generous surprise for a Marine Corps veteran, gifting a trip to the most anticipated showdown in American sports—the Super Bowl. Stroud, alongside USAA and the Air & Space Forces Association, has awarded retired U.S. Marine Craig Mazeska and his young son with tickets to the high-stakes game on February 11 in Las Vegas.
According to KENS 5, Mazeska, a Purple Heart recipient and combat engineer, served from 1988 to 1994 and was on the front lines in operations like Desert Storm. His tenure included the breaching of walls, minefields, and other formidable barriers during his deployment in Kuwait and Iraq. Now a retired teacher and school counselor living in Washington D.C., Mazeska is set to experience one of football's most exhilarating spectacles, courtesy of a player who acknowledges the profundity of military service.
Stroud, arising as a beacon of philanthropy and humility in NFL's new generation of athletes, follows through on his appreciation for military families. “Beyond football, my family is one of the most influential parts of my life, and I especially appreciate the lessons learned from my loved ones who have served in the military,” Stroud affirmed in a statement obtained by MSN Sports. He added, “Marine Corps veteran Sergeant Craig Mazeska selflessly served our country, so I’m honored to join USAA and the Air & Space Forces Association to send Sergeant Mazeska and his son to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, where I look forward to meeting them.”
Stroud, who is a contender for the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year, also shows his gravitas not just on the gridiron but in the realm of giving back. The No. 2 pick in the 2023 draft, Stroud has already carved a niche for himself in Texans' fans hearts. His preeminent play has led to him being named Offensive Rookie of the Year by both the AP and the Pro Football Writers of America. Now, his good deeds off the field are further cementing his status as an athlete with exceptional character and recognition of things larger than the game. As Mazeska, who's a fan of the Baltimore Ravens, anticipates seeing his team potentially take the field in the ultimate championship, he'll also experience the rare privilege of meeting some of the NFL stars, including the benefactor who made his trip possible.
