The City's Junior Citizens Academy wrapped up its six-week stint in December, churning out a new batch of civically enlightened middle schoolers. In an effort to groom the next generation of public servants and informed citizens, the Academy selected top-performing students, as identified by their respective school heads, to dive into the machinery of local government. Participants spent each week exploring different city departments, ranging from Administration to Community Development and the Homeless & Mental Health Services arm of the HBPD, garnering insights that typical classroom settings would struggle to impart.
Established to provide a foundational understanding of how a city functions, the JCA program has been pulling students out of the familiar confines of their everyday classes and thrusting them into the hands of various departments. In a Facebook post, the City of Huntington Beach Government praised the middle schoolers for their outstanding commitment while learning the nuts and bolts of civic government. This first-hand experience aims to bequeath a sense of community engagement and responsibility to the discerning youths.
Expressing gratitude for the families' dedication, the City's post lauded the concerted effort to help young students gain a deeper respect for the intricacies of municipal management. "We thank these students (& their parents) for their commitment in learning about civic government," the post read, spotlighting the integral role familial support plays in the educational process.
As the curtains close on this year's program, the city has already planted the seeds for next year's iteration. The JCA will return in fall 2024, yet again seeking to handpick students with an aptitude for leadership and governance.
