A 28-year-old Kingsville man, Adrian Vela, has been hit with a hefty 300-month prison sentence for crimes related to child pornography, following an announcement from U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. According to the Department of Justice, Vela pleaded guilty on Feb. 2, 2023, to charges including sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography.
U.S. District Judge David S. Morales imposed concurrent sentences of 300 and 240 months for the respective possession and production offenses, but, it's the 300-month term that will stick for Vela. In the courtroom, heart-wrenching letters from the victims and their family members spoke of the torment inflicted by Vela's actions. "The pain, anguish, damage to the victims does not end... it will always exist," the judge remarked during sentencing. On top of his prison time, Vela faces a $27,000 bill in restitution and a 25-year supervised release which will be dotted with stringent conditions.
The vile stash of child abuse images and videos that put Vela on the radar was first noticed online, sparking the interest of law enforcement agencies. A search warrant executed at his residence brought the dark truth into the light as Vela admitted to possessing, and to creating, the illegal content. Vela didn't dodge custody since his admission and will soon be transferred to a federal prison for what will constitute a large chunk of his life.
Homeland Security Investigations took the lead on the case with support from the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick Overman and, John Marck had the grim job of prosecuting a case that forms part of the larger Project Safe Childhood initiative. A program set in motion since 2006 by the Department of Justice, with the express purpose of dismantling the networks that perpetuate such heinous crimes against the youngest in society. Further information about the initiative and internet safety can be found on the DOJ's PSC page.
