Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stepped forward with a solemn vow to confront the city's gun violence, in the aftermath of a mass shooting that marred New Year's Eve festivities Downtown. Mayor Bass, who recently took office with a pledge to tackle the city's safety issues head-on, has been actively coordinating with local authorities ever since the violent outbreak that claimed lives and cast a shadow over the holiday celebrations.
Mayor Bass communicated her sympathies and a strong message of solidarity. "On behalf of the entire City, I want to extend my condolences to those impacted by the mass shooting over the holiday weekend in Downtown Los Angeles," she stated. Immediately looking to mobilize resources, she highlighted that "The Office of Community Safety has worked around the clock since the incident with community interventionists as well as with the Los Angeles Police Department to provide support for those impacted and to hold those responsible accountable." This commitment comes as part of her administration's broader mandate to ensure public safety, as reported in a statement from her office.
The Mayor, confronting the wounds of a community in mourning, laid out a clear plan of action. Armed with the support of various community leaders and local safety officials, she plans to have meetings, which will focus on proactive strategies to prevent future tragedies. "In the coming week, I will be meeting with survivors, community leaders as well as with interventionists to discuss proactive ways we can work to ensure that all Angelenos are safe," Mayor Bass promised.
Action on gun violence, a scourge that has afflicted too many American cities, remains at the front line of Mayor Bass's administrative agenda. Declaring eradicating gun violence as a top priority, she affirms her administration's dedication to public safety as its cornerstone policy.
