The streets of Los Angeles rang with the sound of sirens rather than revving engines late Saturday night as the LAPD's Street Racing Task Force put the brakes on illegal speedsters. Cops swarmed the intersection of Century Boulevard and Western Avenue at approximately 11:20 p.m., where they found a full-blown street takeover in progress. The operation resulted in numerous arrests and impounded vehicles.
According to LAPD officials, the task force managed to detain 24 individuals on misdemeanor charges for "Exhibition of Speed / Aid and Abet" and slapped 13 onlookers with citations for being "Spectators at The Scene of a Street Takeover." Adding insult to injury for these racers, authorities also put 14 of their vehicles on a 30-day timeout, impounding them under the city’s tough street racing laws.
The task force hit the nitrous on their crackdown efforts, disrupting a total of five street takeovers throughout the night. Their blitz extended beyond their usual haunts patrolled by the 77th Division, Southeast Division, reaching into neighboring communities in Los Angeles County.
For those with information about such events, the LAPD urges them to reach out to the Street Racing Task Force directly or to report anonymously via L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers hotline or the "P3 Tips" mobile application.
