Mourners and commuters alike were struck with grief and inconvenience, respectively, as the closure affected the flow of traffic along a busy stretch of road known for its frequent use by those traveling between various points of interest in Long Beach. According to the Long Beach Post, the victim was strikingly hit by a vehicle while crossing Pacific Coast Highway near Cherry Avenue, "outside of a marked crosswalk." The driver, heading westbound, was involved in the tragic occurrence.
The AOL news article also provided insight from one witness at the harrowing scene. "A woman riding a bicycle was crossing at PCH and Cherry when a car hit her and dragged her several yards," testified Tammy Long, who witnessed the aftermath of the collision.
The Long Beach Police Department has not yet released the identity of the victim or details concerning the driver involved in the incident. The area was cordoned off well into the night as investigators worked to unravel the circumstances that led up to the fatal crash. The police's efforts were centered around compiling evidence that could shed light on the dynamics of the impact, which terminal in what would otherwise have been another Sunday evening on PCH.
