Macomb County has teamed up with JVIS, a manufacturing leader, to bring a new edge to road safety. They're rolling out a pilot project aimed at keeping traffic signals clear of snow and ice, a known danger when temperatures drop. The county's Department of Roads has taken a technological leap forward by installing heated traffic signal tech at several intersections.
This initiative comes on the heels of a switch to LED traffic lights, which, while more energy-efficient, lack the snow-melting heat emitted by their incandescent predecessors. It's a solution to a glitch in a system not prepared for such an oversight, one that could have dire consequences on road safety.“Macomb County is committed to improving public safety by enhancing our transportation network with innovative traffic and safety technology solutions,” Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel stated, as per a Macomb County announcement. JVIS has stepped in with their CoreHeat™ technology to ensure LED signals remain a guidance through sleet and snow.
Three intersections now boast these new heated signals: Jefferson Avenue's crossings at Crocker Boulevard, 21 Mile Road, and Cotton Road. The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) and JVIS are banking on this test run proving the tech's effectiveness in wintery conditions. According to a statement by JVIS President Jason Murar, the technology was developed after recognizing the significant risk snow build-up poses to traffic light visibility.
The innovative system operates only when there's actual snow to fight, keeping energy use at a minimum while promises for road safety are on the rise. “The pilot project installed at key intersections in Macomb County represents a significant step towards evaluating the technology's effectiveness in mitigating the safety risks associated with snow and ice accumulation on LED traffic lights.” MCDR Director Bryan Santo said, according to the official news release. The heating tech, seamlessly integrated into current signal structures, is expected to be a substantial upgrade for the traffic system, assuring that signals stay clear and drivers stay safe.
