Macomb County's veterans and residents earning less than $63,000 can breathe a sigh of relief this tax season, as they are offered free tax preparation support through a combined effort by the Macomb County Veterans Services, Macomb Community Action, and the Accounting Aid Society. The benevolent program, associated with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), is slated to operate from Jan. 27 through April 15, aiming to demystify tax filings and help individuals harness every dollar they’re entitled to.
County Executive Mark Hackel said in a statement obtained by CBS Detroit, "We hope to help as many individuals as possible in navigating the complexities of the system and getting the returns they deserve," articulating the goal to provide multifaceted tax assistance, from in-person to drop-off services the commitment resonates with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who appeals to the state's residents to pitch in as VITA volunteers, offering training and an opportunity to back their community. Whitmer states, "Free tax preparation services lower costs for working families and help them get back every dollar that they are owed," emphasizing the government's endeavors that resulted in over "$1 billion in tax relief for seniors and working families."
In-person appointments for tax assistance can be scheduled through an online portal or by ringing up 586-463-2537, with specific times designated for veterans at VVA Chapter 154, as highlighted by the Macomb County, Michigan. Meanwhile, the program extends its support beyond the regular tax season, offering services from April 16 to September 30 by appointment, ensuring that the help doesn't cease with the deadline's rush.
VITA program searches for volunteers who can commit to one 4-6 hour shift each week, a call echoed by county officials who stress the importance of support for these programs, individuals eager to volunteer need basic computer knowledge and a touch of tax filing experience, this initiative provides critical tax support to Michigan residents who might otherwise struggle with the taxing task of tax preparations. For those willing to lend their expertise, the program director can be contacted at 586-469-6507.
Meeting the criteria of a family income beneath $57,000, amongst other qualifications, residents can reach for assistance through various means including virtual appointments, walk-ins, and personal meetings—a variety of conduits tailored to different needs and circumstances, as reported by Macomb Daily. With the proper documentation in hand, the path to a smoother tax season seems less daunting for those who stand to benefit from such programs in Macomb County.
