A man tragically lost his life in a blaze that gutted an apartment in Houston last night, authorities have reported. The fire, which coincided with a spell of freezing temperatures gripping the city, broke out in the Woodcreek on the Bayou apartment complex located at 7930 Corporate Drive, near Chinatown.
The Houston Fire Department, battling not just the flames but the icy weather, quickly arrived on the scene. Despite their efforts, the man, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the location, the Houston Chronicle reported. Authorities are still to determine the cause of the fire and whether the harsh weather conditions played any role in the tragedy.
In the aftermath of the incident, District 68 Chief Mo Davis told reporters that the day had been especially challenging for the fire department. "District 68 worked on three to four fires Monday," Davis explained, signaling a spike in fire-related emergencies as the city grapples with uncharacteristically low temperatures.
No injuries among firefighters were reported while they fought to bring the inferno under control, finally extinguishing it just before 11 p.m., according to KHOU. The Houston Fire Department has since encouraged the public to avoid the area around Corporate Drive near where Beechnut Street intersects with Beltway 8, as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
