The mayoral team in Los Angeles is expanding its linguistic horizons with the recent appointment of a new Deputy Director of Korean Language Communications. Mayor Karen Bass' Communications Office announced that Jieun Kim has been tapped for the role, according to a statement on the Mayor's official website.
Mayor Bass has brought in a known advocate and communicator - Jieun Kim, who has experience reaching out to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community while serving as a Field Deputy for the 12th Los Angeles City Council District and is well-prepared for this new challenge. Originally hailing from Korea, Kim's move to the States in 2010 led her to a career in journalism, contributing to Korean media on both a local and international scale, as per the mayor's official website.
Kim's responsibilities included helping stakeholders navigate city-related issues, managing outreach programs, especially concerning immigration, and acting as a liaison between government agencies, nonprofits, small businesses, and neighborhood organizations. She enters a robust Communications Office, led by Deputy Mayor of Communications Zach Seidl, and joins a diverse team aimed at inclusive dialogue with Los Angeles' multicultural populace.
Kim's role is carved out to specifically cater to the city's Korean-speaking residents, ensuring their access to important city information and services. The team she joins is filled with professionals versed in multi-language communication such as Anaí Ibarra, Deputy Director of Spanish Language Communications, ensuring that language should never be a barrier in accessing vital city resources in Los Angeles.
